Commentary Update for April 22, 2002: Doyle, Bird Op-Ed, Hentz Letter, Photos

This week's Commentary guest is Wisconsin Attorney General and Democratic candidate for governor James Doyle. I must admit that my opinion of Doyle went up after the interview. It's not that I agreed with him on most issues--in fact I probably disagree with him on most--but he comes off as much more of a "no-nonsense" and down to earth guy than I thought he would be. I actually thought he was more candid than Barrett. And while Doyle's not going to win any charisma contests anytime soon, he certainly is not as "boring" as the press has been suggesting.

The only Democrat candidate for governor who has not been on the show is Kathy Falk. She will join us on May 6th. Next week's guest is sportswriter Chuck Carlson.

Some website items:

Former Oshkosh School Board President LuAnn Bird had an op-ed in the Sunday Northwestern. The piece included some fascinating Wisconsin school history, including the fact that there were over 7,500 school districts in Wisconsin in 1937. Wow!
Here's the op-ed:

Cheryl Hentz, a candidate for Winnebago County Board supervisor earlier this month, emailed me a copy of a letter she has recently sent to the Oshkosh Northwestern. She wonders why the paper is all of a sudden praising County Board Chair Joe Maehl, a man they have been lambasting pretty much non-stop for the last several years:
