No matter whose shoes you’re wearing, sexual violence affects everyone.

That is the reason for the upcoming Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. The annual men’s march to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence will take place from 4:30 until 7 p.m. May 4.

“Walk A Mile is important because it opens the dialogue to talk about sexual violence. Without open communication on this issue, the violence will never end,” said McKenzie Valenta, of Mosinee, a UWO human services leadership major and co-president of the Women’s Advocacy Council (WAC).

The event beings at Reeve Memorial Union.

The event is hosted by the Women’s Center and is co-sponsored by a collective of UW Oshkosh departments from across campus. There is no cost to register for the event, but donations are being collected for Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services and Reach Counseling. (Register online.)

“Walk a Mile is a great opportunity for men to raise awareness about the serious causes and effects of gender violence. By providing support and talking to other men about these issues, male allies play a huge role in ending gender violence,” Brooke Berrens, of Chilton, a UWO women’s and gender studies major and co-president of WAC, said.

Though the walk is open to people associated with any gender, men are encouraged to wear high heels and women are encouraged to wear whatever feels comfortable to complete the one-mile walk.
