Audacity Videos

These videos demonstrate how to setup and use Audacity to record audio files and to convert them to MP3 files that can be used in a Podcast.

Before you begin viewing the Audacity videos, I recommend you download and print out Nick Dvoracek's Audacity Handout. I also recommend you have Audacity installed and running while you are viewing the videos. By having Audacity running, you will be able to switch between the videos and Audacity. See below for downloading Audacity.

Videos for Recording in Audacity:

1. Setting up Audacity. (3:04 Minutes)

If you are using a Windows computer and you want to set the preferences in Audacity, you will find Preferences under the Edit menu.

If you cannot set up your computer in Audacity, you will have to go to the computer's Systems Preference (Mac)/Control Panel (Windows) and set your input and output devices.

Windows computers: Start/Settings/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices
Macintosh computers:
System Preferences.../Sound

2. Recording and editing in Audacity. (6:20 Minutes)

3. Editing and Adding a second track that has Music. (6:08 Minutes)

Download Audacity:

Microsoft Windows users can install Audacity portable on their USB flash drive. Using Audacity portable will allow you to do your recording on any Windows machine with out having to install it on the computer. You can download the files using this link. Remember this is for Windows only not Mac users. If you have a Mac you can use GarageBand to record or download Audacity for the Mac.

Before you do your first interview make sure you have practiced using this program. It is not very professional to start an interview and have a lot of hardware and software problems. You need to know what you are doing before you go into the field. Remember the person you are interviewing is probably very nervous.

  1. Download the file and unzip it.
  2. Place the unzipped FOLDER on your USB flash drive.
  3. To use Audacity, open the folder on your USB flash drive and double click on the Audacity program.
  4. Once you have Audacity running and have recorded something you will need to locate the lame_enc.dll
  5. go to File>export MP3
  6. It may ask you to locate the lame_enc.dll if it does, you will find it on your USB drive in the
    AudacityPortable folder/App/LAMPE/
  7. After you have located the lame_enc.dll you are good to go and you will be able to export to MP3. You will only have to do this the first time you export to MP3. After that it should remember where it is.

If you would like to install Audacity on your computer, rather than use it on your portable drive you will need to download it from the Audacity web site at: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

After you select your operating system, you will be able to download Audacity and the LAME MP3 encoder from the same page. Make sure you download and install both files.
