About the Better Way Cafe

WisACT is looking for people who are interested in connecting with all kinds of people, including from different backgrounds and with different political beliefs. It is increasingly rare to have conversations that bridge divides and our communities suffer due to this polarization. Solutions will emerge when more people have healthy interactions in places that are part of our communities’ social infrastructure. Places where we can see the light, be the light, find joy in conversation and collaboration, even if working in the middle is messy. As we do, we will not only be more likely to identify actual solutions but also create a more encompassing sense of belonging for the people involved. Being able to do so is a bold and beautiful gift.

If so, please complete this brief form. The idea is not to create an actual business but a regular get together (coffee klatch, happy hour, some other sort of social gathering) in your area with the express purpose of bringing people with different backgrounds (based on factors like race/ethnicity, political affiliation, living in different parts of town, etc.) to have friendly conversations that are built on the idea of “Connection Before Content”: We should focus on developing relationships with people with different views than ours before we start debating politics. This allows one to trust enough to be vulnerable, to take strategic risks, and tell the truth. You can choose to have your Better Way Cafe at a set location so it’s very predictable for participants, or rotate locations to people get experience different settings in your community. We’ll help you organize and promote it and offer to come as guests if you like.
