Criminal Justice

UWO’s Criminal Justice Department offers a Major and Minor in Criminal Justice.  The criminal justice curriculum for the major is designed to prepare students for careers in many professions related to crime and justice (criminal justice careers).  Courses focusing on law, corrections, policing and criminology teach students about the complexities associated with the criminal justice process and crime analysis.  In addition to this course work, criminal justice students have the opportunity to learn outside the classroom through criminal justice internships at a variety of criminal justice agencies.  And, since our criminal justice major includes a focus on criminological theory, research methodology, statistical analysis, and law, graduates earn a criminal justice education that will have prepared them to pursue advanced degrees in the fields of Criminology, Criminal Justice, and Law.

Indigenous Studies

Indigenous Studies is a dynamic, interdisciplinary approach that emphasizes Indigenous knowledge systems, pedagogy, leadership, problem solving, perspectives and methodologies employed by Indigenous Peoples.

The Indigenous Studies Certificate provides students opportunities to develop their understandings of Indigenous perspectives, voices, experiences, cultures, complex histories, and contemporary issues.  The certificate program’s focus on Indigeneity extends from the First Nations people of Wisconsin throughout North America and globally.

This program aims to expand experiential learning opportunities, with a special emphasis on how cultural and environmental sustainability converges with Indigenous knowledge and practices, while opening possibilities for mutually beneficial collaborative partnerships with Native mentors and communities.

Military Science

Military Science provides students with an immersive leadership development experience through the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program. The curriculum is designed to cultivate leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills while emphasizing military science, ethics, and professional development.
Military Science courses are open to all students and offer a unique opportunity to gain practical leadership experience, teamwork skills, and physical fitness training. The program combines classroom instruction with hands-on training, including field exercises, land navigation, tactical decision-making, and military history. Students also engage in leadership labs and physical training to enhance their personal and professional growth.

Participation in ROTC does not require a military service commitment unless students choose to contract with the Army. For those who do, the program provides pathways to commissioning as an Officer in the U.S. Army, Army National Guard, or Army Reserve. 

Graduates of the Military Science program emerge with the skills and confidence to excel in military and civilian leadership roles, making them competitive candidates for a wide range of careers.

    Economics

By studying economics, you will learn to think critically and systematically about individual and collective decisions over the use of resources and learn how these choices affect societies. From pollution to poverty to import tariffs, students in economics use intuition, mathematical models, and statistical analysis to evaluate everyday choices made by individuals, firms, and governments.
