Instead of brainstorming resourceful ways to pay for textbooks, students at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh can enter the “I Chose UWO” multimedia contest and have a chance to win free books for one semester.

The multimedia contest requires students to write a short essay, capture photos or shoot a short video showing school spirit and expressing creativity while explaining why they chose to attend UW Oshkosh.

Students must select and apply one theme to their entry and include a cover page that briefly explains the entry in less than 200 words.

The grand-prize winner will receive free books for one semester (up to $500); second place will receive a $250 University Books & More gift card; and third, fourth and fifth place each will receive $100 bookstore gift cards.

The following is a basic list of guidelines:

  • Photo gallery: 5-15 pictures taken on the UW Oshkosh campus submitted via CD to Dempsey 238 by Sept. 18
  • Video: 30-90 seconds submitted via DVD to Dempsey 238 by Sept. 18

“This contest is an opportunity for students to creatively showcase their originality and produce an authentic expression of why they chose UW Oshkosh as their place to invest in their future,” said Jeanette DeDiemar, executive director of Integrated Marketing and Communications at UW Oshkosh.

Entries will be judged on enthusiasm for UW Oshkosh, creativity and quality of the entry. The grand-prize winner and his or her multimedia presentation will be revealed Oct. 21, 2009, in Reeve Theatre (307).

“We all have a story,” said Pat Goetz, a journalism major who plans to write an essay for the contest. “I didn’t even know there was a university here, but now I know this is where I belong.”
