Pamela M. Lassiter, an equity and affirmative action leader as well as a lawyer with more than two decades of experience, has been named the director of equity and affirmative action at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Her appointment is effective Aug. 1, 2008.

Lassiter will provide guidance to senior administrators, faculty, staff and student leaders with regard to equity and affirmative action needs, as well as provide leadership in developing policies and procedures in support of the campus’s goal of fostering an environment of support and dignity for students, faculty, staff and guests of the University.

Lassiter served as the associate director of workplace diversity for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). In that role, she provided equal employment opportunity support for the Newark campus office, serving 9,000 employees covered by 13 labor unions and 3,000 students. She played a key role in developing and implementing an Affirmative Action Plan and assisted in communicating it across units.

“Ms. Lassiter brings to the University a wealth of knowledge and experience in human resources, equity and affirmative action,” said Chancellor Richard H. Wells. “With more than two decades of related experience, Pam will provide leadership in developing, recommending and implementing policies, procedures and programs regarding all aspects of equity, equal employment opportunity, diversity, affirmative action and employee disability.”

Wells said Lassiter will be a key member of the Chancellor’s staff. “Pam has a proven track record in working proactively to support equity and affirmative action,” said Wells. “She has the experience to take responsibility for helping to communicate and coordinate the University’s commitment to inclusive excellence.”

“I am tremendously pleased with the opportunity to build on the University’s foundation of diversity and look forward to developing new and enhancing current efforts to create an inclusive and supportive environment for the community,” said Lassiter.

In addition to serving as the associate director of workplace diversity for UMDNJ, Lassiter has been a Human Resources consultant, providing training on supervisory skills and assisting clients with discrimination complaints.

Lassiter also was a consultant for Ajilon Professional Staffing, the director of human resources for Navisys Inc., director of compliance and diversity programs for City University of New York (CUNY), benefits consultant for PriceWaterhouseCoopers, human resources staffing manager for AT&T Corp., employment administrator for The CIT Group, senior equal employment opportunity representative for Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield and equal opportunity specialist for the U.S. Department of Labor/Employment Standards Administration – Office of Federal Contracts Compliance Program (OFCCP).

She has also taught courses, such as employment law, human resources management, organizational behavior, negotiations and business ethics, for four major universities, including William Paterson University and Rutgers University. Lassiter will teach a human relations course in the College of Business at UW Oshkosh.

Lassiter earned her bachelor’s degree from Queens College of the City University of New York in 1982 and her juris doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1985.
