University of Wisconsin Oshkosh students have an opportunity ahead that just might be a game-changer.
Career Fair on the Fox, the twice-a-year event to get students and employers face-to-face, will be held virtually from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 17. It’s a chance for students to meet with employers online to learn about work and educational opportunities, practice connecting with professionals and potentially make career decisions based on their interests and outcomes of the interactions at the fair.
“Networking is the No. 1 way students find jobs and internships,” said Chrissy Lambie, marketing manager and healthcare career adviser in the UW Oshkosh Career and Professional Development office. “It all starts with making a connection. Talking to a recruiter or an alum working at the organization the student is interested in is a great way to have a conversation about their career goals. Wondering what a day in the life is like? Ask. Not sure what kind of job you can do using your history degree? Ask.”
More than 120 employers are taking part, representing industries ranging from banking and healthcare to retail and manufacturing. Among them are Oshkosh Corp., Schneider, ThedaCare, Northwestern Mutual, Epic Systems, Mercury Marine and Enterprise Holdings. There also are a number of nonprofits and graduate schools taking part.
The event, held each spring and fall, is traditionally an in-person gathering on the UWO campus. This spring fair—like the one held this past September—will be virtual because of the ongoing pandemic.
“We learned that both employers and students really enjoyed the virtual experience they had in the fall,” Lambie said. “The one-on-one sessions provided students an experience more focused on them, without the intensity of having to stand in line, waiting for an opportunity to talk to someone.”
To help students get ready, a practice fair is planned for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 16. This will provide a chance for students to practice logging in and testing their equipment. Students also are encouraged to register for the career fair early and to sign up for time slots that best fit their schedules.
