Art Munin, associate vice chancellor and dean of students at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, will lend expertise as a faculty member at the prestigious University of Southern California’s Race and Equity Center. Munin will continue in his role at UW Oshkosh: his work for the Race and Equity Center will include offering virtual programs.

Munin most recently served as interim vice chancellor of student affairs at UWO while Vice Chancellor Cheryl Green was serving as interim chancellor at UW-Whitewater.

Created by Shaun Harper, the Center has garnered attention in the fields of race and equity since its inception. In October 2018, it was on the cover of Diverse Issues in Higher Education.

The Center includes the Equity Institutes, an entity that partners with organizations seeking professional development for their leadership.

“I am incredibly honored to have been asked to join the faculty for the USC Race and Equity Center,” Munin said. “Dr. Shaun Harper’s work is well-known and deeply valued throughout higher education. To now be part of the faculty and able to contribute to this meaningful work is humbling.”

Munin will deliver educational sessions as part of the USC Race and Equity Center’s Equity Institutes initiatives. He will partner with higher education institutions seeking to advance the learning and development of their leadership teams as they work to create equitable campus communities.

He will teach three sessions:

  • Talking about Race, Racism and Racial Inequalities
  • Advancing Racial Equity in Mostly White Contexts
  • “But I’m Not a Racist!”: Navigating the Defensive Emotions of Campus Racial Conflict

Munin met Harper several years ago when Harper drafted a forward to a book Munin had co-written a chapter for, Closing the Opportunity Gap: Identity-Conscious Strategies for Retention and Student Success.

Munin said being part of the USC work will further enhance his knowledge and skill set as it relates to inclusive excellence.

“It is UW Oshkosh’s sincere commitment to inclusive excellence that keeps me both challenged and invigorated in my work as associate vice chancellor and dean of students,” Munin said. “I greatly value UW Oshkosh Vice Chancellor Dr. Cheryl Green’s support of me becoming part of this initiative, and I will intentionally weave in what I learn through this experience into my service at UW Oshkosh.”

Robert Babcock, director of residence life at UW Oshkosh, said Munin has consulted on diversity, multiculturalism and inclusion in higher education for nearly 20 years, and he is a published author and contributor.

“He’s a fantastic presenter, as I have seen him present on numerous occasions and he freely shares his original presentation materials with anyone who asks, because he believes strongly in the mission,” Babcock said. “This reflects incredibly well on UWO to have an academic staff member be named to such a prominent role, further underscoring our university commitment to social justice and inclusive excellence.”
