Success continues to flourish in the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh athletics department

The Titans celebrated their 47th National Championship in March when the Titan men’s basketball team won a coveted National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III title. UW Oshkosh owns the second most national titles in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).

The National Championship for the Titan men’s basketball team was the first in their 121-year history and the first for the UWO athletics department since the Titan women’s indoor track and field team won the national championship in 2014.

The Titans defeated Swarthmore College, 96-82, in the title game, held in Fort Wayne, Indiana, at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. Dual-sport student-athlete Jack Flynn was named the Most Outstanding Player at the Final Four and scored a career-high 33 points in the championship game.

Interim first-year head men’s basketball coach Matt Lewis was named the Division III National Coach of the Year after leading the Titans to a 29-3 record, the first outright WIAC regular season title in 41 years and the national championship.

More Athletic Achievements

The women’s gymnastics team earned a spot in the National Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championship for the first time since 2014. The Titans finished fourth at the championship with a final score of 189.400. Titan head coach Lauren Karnitz ’07, MSE ’13, was named the 2019 NCGA Coach of the Year.

Men’s diver Matt Wilke dove to a pair of top-16 finishes at the NCAA Division III Championship. He placed 13th in the 3-meter and 16th in the 1-meter diving categories.

The men’s cross country team had two Titans earn spots in the NCAA Division III Championship and the women’s cross country team had one Titan qualify. On the men’s side, Cody Chadwick placed 67th and Lucas Weber 143rd, while Evlyn Noone finished 52nd in the women’s race.

The women’s basketball team won both the 2019 WIAC regular season and tournament championships enroute to earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. The Titans reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the third time in six years. Brad Fischer was tabbed the WIAC Coach of the Year and the Central Region Coach of the Year.

Wrestler Mark Choinski capped his decorated career with a third consecutive All-America performance at the NCAA Division III Championship with a third-place performance.

Sixteen total members of the men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship. Robert Ogbuli, Ryan Powers and Jonathan Wilburn each earned All-American honors for their performances on the men’s side, and Cheyenne Moore and Lauren Wrensch claimed All-American status on the women’s side.
