The University Children’s Center at the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley has been named a Youngstar Five Star provider by the Wisconsin Department of Children and families for the fifth consecutive year.

To improve the quality of child care, this program evaluates and rates the quality of care given by providers, setting a consistent standard for quality in the state. In addition to serving as a resource to help parents choose the best child care programs, it also supports providers with tools and training. As a part of the Youngstar process, programs are evaluated in the following areas: Education and Training, Learning Environment and Curriculum, Business and Professional Practices and Health and Wellness. The University Children’s Center at UW-Fox Valley has been awarded a Five Star rating (38 out of 40 points).

“A healthy early childhood environment sets the stage for later learning,” said Wendy Eagon, director of University Children’s Center at UW-Fox Valley. “Most importantly, a child’s emotional development is the basis for all later development. Early relationships matter. Here, children are given the opportunity to experience; regulate and express emotions; form close and secure interpersonal relationships; and explore his or her environment. Building positive relationships in the early years provide the building blocks for good mental health. We support and value families in this process. Our commitment to provide a quality early childhood program to the families is enhanced through participation in the Youngstar rating system.”

Eagon has worked at the Center since 1981 and employs a staff of three preschool teachers and one toddler teacher. They believe children learn best through play and active engagement in their learning environment, purposefully planning and implementing meaning experiences based on Creative Curriculum and Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards. To assure that all children experience success, they partner with parents and use information gained from the observation and individual assessments to intentionally teach and support the learning and development of each child.
