The University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley will hold its annual spring Commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 21, in the Fieldhouse, 1478 Midway Road, Menasha.

UWFox graduates at the spring Commencement ceremony will be awarded the Associate of Arts and Science Degree. Graduates who completed one of the collaborative degree programs offered at UWFox in partnership with four-year UW campuses will also be awarded their bachelor’s degree during the ceremony.

Northwestern University faculty member Patty Loew, Ph.D., will give the commencement address. Loew is a professor in the Medill School of Journalism and director of Native American and Indigenous Research at the university. The former television broadcast journalist is a member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe and has produced award-winning television documentaries and written extensively about Ojibwe treaty rights, sovereignty, and the role of Native media in communicating indigenous world views.

She is the author of “Indian Nations of Wisconsin: Histories of Endurance and Renewal,” now in its second edition, which won the Wisconsin Library Association’s 2002 Outstanding Book Award; “Native People of Wisconsin,” which is used by 18,000 Wisconsin school children as a social studies text; and a “Teacher’s Guide to Native People of Wisconsin.” Her latest book, “Seventh Generation Earth Ethics,” won the 2014 Midwest Book Award for Culture.

Loew’s Wisconsin roots include a prior faculty position as professor in the Department of Life Sciences Communication at University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is Professor Emerita, UW-Extension, and is an Honorary Fellow in the Department of Civil Society and Community Studies in the UW-Madison School of Human Ecology.  In 2011, Loew received the Distinguished Alumni Award from UW-La Crosse and in 2010, Outstanding Woman of Color awards from both UW-Madison and the University of Wisconsin System. She holds honorary doctorates from Edgewood and Northland Colleges. 

Jens Carter, a chemical engineering major from Appleton, is the UWFox 2018 student of the year and will be recognized during the ceremony. On campus, Carter jumped into student life with his participation in the FoxBytes Computer Club, the Fox Valley Engineering Society and Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium (WSGC) collegiate rocketry team. He has been part of undergraduate research teams with UWFox professors Dr. Saleh Alnaeli and Dr. Warren Vaz. Carter will be continuing his research through a grant received from the WSGC.

There will be a reception for graduates and their families in the Communication Arts Center following the ceremony.
