College for Kids begins July 21; LEAPS begins July 28
The college classrooms at the University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac will be filled with students of a much younger age during two upcoming summer youth programs – College for Kids which runs July 21-24 and LEAPS which runs July 28-31.
This is the 24th year that the university has opened its classrooms during the summer for area children during these week-long programs coordinated by UW-Fond du Lac’s Continuing Education office. Students have the opportunity to use their creativity and explore new areas of interest or learn more about something they already love.
College for Kids is for students entering grades 5-8. About 90 students will be participating in one of four specialized camps this year. Students with an interest in the STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) fields will be in courses that focus on chemistry, technology, crime scene investigation or even the science of magic. Other students will be part of a robotics camps where they will build a robot from scratch or an art camp featuring a hands-on sculpture course and a watercolor course.
During LEAPS, 70 students entering grades 2-4 will be part of either a STEM camp or an art camp. In the STEM camp, students will be conducting chemistry experiments, learning about flight or collaborating to solve problems with math skills. In the art camp, they will be learning about printmaking, experiencing do-it-yourself projects like soap-making or exploring animal characteristics through art.
On the last day of both programs, parents or special guests are invited to join their student in the classroom. “This day is always a lot of fun for both the children and the parents,” said Rhonda Stucky, UW-Fond du Lac continuing education director. “The students are eager to share what they’ve been learning and it gives the parents an opportunity to see first-hand what their children have been talking about all week.”
