The American Association of University Women (AAUW) awarded a $550 scholarship to Sydney Blaine (center) of Fond du Lac High School. The scholarship was open to former GEMS (Girls Engineering Math Science) conference participants who are currently high school seniors or college freshmen and declaring a STEM major. Presenting the scholarship were Dolores Mick (left), president of the Fond du Lac AAUW, and Rhonda Stucky (right), UW-Fond du Lac Continuing Education director.
Blaine is a high school senior planning to attend UW-Oshkosh where she has been accepted into the nurse scholars program. After she earns her Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing, she plans to go on to become a nurse anesthetist.
“I can still remember the workshops,” said Blaine of the GEMS conference she attended. “I loved how they were so interactive, educational and enjoyable. I learned that girls have the power to do great things.”
The next GEMS conference will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1.
