Alexandra “Allie” Broeniman and Isabella Tremonti started their University of Wisconsin Oshkosh student jobs at University Marketing and Communications (UMC) on the very same day. Though working in different areas: Broeniman in photography and Tremonti in graphic design, they traveled similar paths, became friends and now have found success as they move into careers.

Seniors Isabella Tremonti, left, and Allie Broeniman, both have secured jobs before graduation.

Designing women

Senior fine arts major Isabella Tremonti said her student design job helped her take the next step in her future.

“I did a lot of work last year for the theatre department and seeing the posters and other advertisements I designed around campus has been really exciting,” said Tremonti, who worked as a designer inUMC.

Broeniman said her three academic years and two summers with a broad range of shoots as a student photographer helped her feel more confident in job interviews.

“I was recently hired as a photographer and videographer with Anderson Pens in Appleton,” she said. “During my interview process, they asked me to create content (take photos and edit some videos) to see how I would work with the team.”

Company leaders liked what they saw and her “test” image soon was on company social media.

A journalism major (with a visual journalism emphasis) and UW Oshkosh Photo Club president, Broeniman, will move back to her hometown in Appleton after graduation. She hopes to “slow down” from the pace she’s maintained the past few years and take some time for hobbies that include shooting photos for her own enjoyment—especially those that feature landscapes and lifestyle imagery.

Real-world projects

A graphic design intern for advertising agency Quill Creative of Oshkosh, Tremonti, a native of Alden, Mich., soon will transition from the role of a student to full-time graphic designer.

“I am very happy and relieved that I was offered a job before graduation at a place that I love,” Tremonti said. “It is very nice knowing that I have a plan in place once I graduate and that my hard work during the past four years has paid off.”

She will begin her position with Quill the Monday after graduation.

Tremonti said her three years as a student designer at UMC gave her a great deal of experience and preparation. She said applying for a student worker position helped her gain skills and confidence in her field of work.

She said the most enjoyable part of working in graphic design is seeing her creations come to life.

“The most valuable skills I learned were applying my design skills to “real-world” projects, communicating with clients and learning the workflow of an office,” she said. “I am so thankful for all of the people I met there (at UMC) who helped me excel to where I am now.”
