Synthetic turf is being installed as the long-anticipated University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Rec Plex nears its ribbon-cutting event May 11.

The multi-use intramural recreational complex allows for an outdoor spot on campus for recreational sports. The 4.35-acre complex includes a lighted artificial turf field, a support building with bathrooms and storage and a heated dome that will be inflated from November to April so activities can take place year-round.

A ribbon-cutting program will begin at 1 p.m. at the Rec Plex Pavillion on Osceola Street.

“The Rec Plex is going to be a fantastic addition to the UWO campus,” said Patrick Marcoe, Rec Plex coordinator. “It will be a perfect place for students to play all kinds of activities and grow a healthy, active campus. We are very excited to introduce new intramural sports and activities to our student recreation program.”

The UW Oshkosh Rec Plex will have two flag football fields, one regulation soccer field and one regulation lacrosse field. The fields are laid out to allow multiple games to occur simultaneously. The facility is located footsteps away from Gruenhagen Conference Center.

The $7.2-million project cost was funded through student segregated fees and funds that remained from reserves and bonds. The projectfirst of its kind on a UW System campuswas spurred by an increase in the number of students who participated in intramural sports the past few years. Groundbreaking took place Sept. 14, 2017.

“The exciting thing is to see something that was developed by student leadership in 2012 finally come to fruition,” said Nathan Scott, director of student recreation at UW Oshkosh, who noted the facility will help expand program offerings in a safe and secure facility located on campus.
