Continuing its winning streak, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Model United Nations team again won Outstanding Delegation Awards at National Model United Nations, the world’s largest Model UN.

It was the 34th consecutive year that UW Oshkosh won Outstanding Delegation Awards, the highest award at the competition.

UW Oshkosh received two Outstanding Delegation awards, winning with both of the countries it represented, making this the 17th consecutive year that UW Oshkosh students won two Outstanding Delegation Awards while representing two countries. Only three universities from among the 136 universities participating won two Outstanding Delegation awards in 2018. UW Oshkosh students represented the African nation of Equatorial Guinea and the Pacific island nation of Brunei Darussalam at the 2018 National Model United Nations held from March 25-29, at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

In addition to the team awards, UW Oshkosh delegates were named as the Outstanding Delegates in their committees by vote of the participating students in two committees, and also won five position paper awards.

The 2018 National Model UN competition involved more than 6,500 student competitors from 180 universities in 48 countries on six continents. Student delegates debated and negotiated agreements regarding a wide range of current issues from the agenda of the real UN, covering political, economic, social, financial and environmental topics, using the same rooms and facilities in which the global diplomats at the United Nations negotiate agreements on these same issues. The concluding General Assembly was held in the Great Hall at UN Headquarters.

Student participants are judged on their diplomatic and negotiating skills, their ability to write accurate legal documents that embody the agreements reached, the accuracy with which they represented their respective nations, their knowledge of global issues, their familiarity with the United Nations system and its procedures, practices, bodies, and committees, and their speaking ability.

As in previous years, UW Oshkosh students clearly stood out among their peers from universities throughout the world in their knowledge of international affairs and the diplomatic process, continuing their 34-year record of excellence, said Kenneth J. Grieb, International Studies coordinator and faculty adviser for the UW Oshkosh Model United Nations Team.

Participating universities included Georgia Southern, Baylor, New South Wales, Washington State University, the City University of New York, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Sciences Po France, Hawaii Pacific University, Copenhagen Business School Denmark, the University of California Santa Barbara, the American University in Cairo, Université du Québec à Montréal, Northwestern Polytechnic University of China, Tecnologico de Monterrey Campus San Luis Potosi, the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, the College of Europe, Texas Christian University, West Virginia University, Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador, the University of Bamberg Germany, Universidad Catolica Andres Bello of Venezuela, and the Japan Model United Nations, to name only a few of the participating schools at the global competition.
