University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Chancellor Andrew J. Leavitt issued the following statement regarding Gov. Scott Walker’s budget:

“Last night, Governor Scott Walker released his 2015-17 budget that includes a plan to designate UW System as a public authority. I genuinely believe the additional flexibility being proposed is necessary for the long-term viability of UW System and, specifically, UW Oshkosh.”

“As anticipated, Governor Walker’s budget proposal also includes a $300 million cut for the UW System as well as a reduction in our cost to continue. This budget cut is significant and will present real challenges to our campus in the years ahead. I share with you the following statement from UW System President Ray Cross in addition to a release from the University of Wisconsin Student Representatives:

“Next week we begin our work to manage these cuts, beginning with Budget Town Hall Forums.”

The sessions will be held at the following times and locations:

  • Monday, Feb. 9 at 9:10 a.m.—Reeve 307
  • Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Noon —Reeve 307 (Feel free to bring your lunch.)

“The week of Feb. 16 begins a series of Chancellor Breakfast Forums where we can continue the discussion and dialogue. Invitations for these forums will be sent later this week.”

“While the budget cut news is understandably concerning to the entire campus community, we still do not know how this will directly impact us. We must preserve our focus on student success while we, together, look for new and innovative ways to operate.”

“I welcome the opportunity to work with faculty, staff and students as we move our university forward during these challenging times.”
