Paulette Feld, Desktop Support Technician at Polk Library, has been named the recipient of the February STAR Award.

She was nominated by Maccabee Levine, Head of Library Technology Services.

Portions of Feld’s nomination follow:

“Paulette Feld is a dedicated staff member whose behind-the-scenes works has a major impact on the students, faculty, staff and other community members who utilize Polk Library. Paulette supports hardware devices throughout the building, from circulating laptops to Polk 101 desktops to the Smartboard and other technology in our group study rooms. But I’m nominating Paulette for the STAR Award for successfully leading one significant project over the last two years — the introduction and support of four high-digital scanners.

“In 2012, the Student Technology Fee enabled the library to acquire a pair of new digital scanners, allowing students to save money and paper when they need to scan a book chapter, journal article or just some class notes. After coordinating with the vendor and Information Technology to install these two scanners, Paulette documented the high use (145,000+ pages scanned in the first year), but also a series of recurring software problems. Paulette persisted through the challenges for over a year, coordinating a resolution to each problem and scheduling the work at off-hours whenever possible to keep the scanners available to students. Following that success, Paulette collaborated with Disability Services to request two additional scanners, now in place, featuring accessible tables and text-to-speech software.

“During all of this work, Paulette displayed not just the willingness to take on this new support responsibility but an eagerness to see the project through, with the confidence that the library was adding a really beneficial service for students. Paulette has since advised other UWO departments as well as library staff throughout the UW System as they evaluate these scanners for their own users. We’re lucky to have Paulette supporting and improving library services for the campus community.”

The CSAC Awards & Recognition Committee submitted this announcement. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to contribute calendar items, campus announcements and other good news to UW Oshkosh Today.
