Chancellor Leavitt meets various UW Oshkosh campus community members during his first official day on campus.

Hundreds of campus community members gathered in Reeve Memorial Union Monday to meet and welcome the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s 11th chancellor to campus.

Chancellor Andrew J. Leavitt officially began his role at the state’s third largest public institution Nov. 3 and will spend the next couple of months getting to better know both the UW Oshkosh and Oshkosh communities.

The Oshkosh Northwestern newspaper recently published a piece by Leavitt, “New UWO chancellor: Collaboration strengthens university, communities we serve” in which the new chancellor outlined his ideas and goals for the first 10o days as UW Oshkosh’s leader.

“I am confident that the good people of Oshkosh, the New North region and the state will continue to learn from and work alongside our campus community members. In pledging to do the same, we will, together, further enrich the quality of life of the people who proudly call northeastern Wisconsin home,” Leavitt wrote in the Northwestern.

At the welcome event, Leavitt introduced the campus community to his wife and youngest daughter and expressed his gratitude to Petra Roter, who served as interim chancellor.

Chancellor Andrew Leavitt shared this note with the campus community on his first official day as UW Oshkosh chancellor:

Dear campus community members,

It is my first day on the job as your Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. I could not be more thrilled to join you.

I am a chemistry professor. I am an advancement leader. I am a husband, a dad, a grandfather and, sometimes, a musician. Today, I am so incredibly proud to also say I am a resident of Oshkosh and a member of the greatest comprehensive regional university in the nation.

I am a Titan.

There are a slew of tasks and to-dos ahead of us as I get settled into my office and into the rhythm of this semester. Your support during my move here has been phenomenal. I feel at home. This has helped me stay focused on the biggest priority and goal in my first 100 days: to listen to you, get to know you and to engage our campus, its governance leaders and leaders in the broader community in a series of important conversations.

I again want to thank Vice Chancellor Petra Roter for her leadership during this time of transition, as well as the full leadership team, our campus governance leaders and all of you for your thoughtful stewardship of UW Oshkosh.

I understand if teaching, work or other commitments prevent you from stopping by today. Do not hesitate to send me an email or stop me and share a “hello” as I am out and about on campus. Also consider connecting with me on Twitter or Facebook.

I look forward to meeting you and working alongside you as one new member of this progressive, determined and inclusive campus community.

Andrew Leavitt, Chancellor
