Mary Fabrycki, a book/MUS shipping assistant with University Books & More, has been named the recipient of the STAR Award for June 2010. Rick DCamp, department of foreign languages and literatures, and Marlene Zdanovec, University Books & More, nominated her. The nomination letter follows:
“Mary Fabrycki has been with the Bookstore for many years as the head cashier and general book buyer. During rush at the beginning of each term, she spends hours beyond the ‘call of duty’ to make certain that the cashier area is seamless. She directly hires and supervises a large staff of LTEs for those lengthy hours during rush times. The rest of the year, she is responsible for student staff, including the student store supervisors,” wrote Zdanovec.
Wrote DCamp, “Recently, the department of foreign languages and literatures went to University Books & More looking to purchase token gifts. We were having difficulty locating items we had purchased in the past, and Mary came and offered her help.
“In speaking with Mary, I realized that she has such a positive attitude toward her work and the University. At a time when morale on campus is generally quite low, it was refreshing to run into someone who had such a positive outlook about her work. It also made me feel guilty for all of those times I complained about whatever in my job wasn’t running as smoothly as it could or should. Mary gave me the insight to positively impact my work here.
“Mary has a special courage to come in to work every day and face all the difficulties that life can throw at a person. Mary has an optimistic attitude, sees the positive in her workplace environment and then spreads that bright outlook on to all the other University community members that she touches. Mary definitely is a University of Wisconsin Oshkosh STAR.”
Winners of the STAR Award receive a framed certificate, a reserved parking space for one month and a gift from University Books & More. The award for exceptional performance is presented each month to a member of the classified staff who has worked at least six months at UW Oshkosh.
