Amanda Bain, a USA for the Center for New Learning (CNL), has been named the recipient of the STAR Award for May 2010. Melissa Schmidt, recruiting coordinator and adviser for the CNL, nominated her. The nomination letter follows:

“Amanda Bain is an exceptional employee at UW Oshkosh. She is the consummate professional, wise and mature beyond her years, and manages an office of 13-plus employees that are scattered all over the state. She completes the contracts for all of our instructors within CNL, posts the many classes on PeopleSoft and communicates constantly with the advisers at all the campus sites. She helps create a warm and inviting environment and is the first point of contact for our students and professors as well as a reliable resource for the off-site advisers.

“Amanda is a wealth of information and has taught myself and many other new staff within the Center for New Learning many of the forms and processes necessary to do our jobs. Amanda is a natural leader and easily has earned the respect of all of the CNL staff and other staff on campus when they meet her on the various committees that she is a part of.

“When I think of Amanda Bain, I think over-achiever (in a good way). She consistently does more than her workload requires, and often I wonder how she completes all that she does. I know that she does more than even I know, as I am an off-site adviser. I often ask Amanda the questions that I would ask any other adviser or the director of CNL because I know she probably knows the answer.

“Amanda does a little of everything within CNL, from enrolling students to creating classes in PeopleSoft to serving on various campus committees to building relationships and collaborations on campus between CNL and other departments to running queries for PeopleSoft to heading Personal Development Days for our department to planning our retreats. Amanda is the go-to resource person for the Center for New Learning.”

Winners of the STAR Award receive a framed certificate, a reserved parking space for one month and a gift from University Books & More. The award for exceptional performance is presented each month to a member of the classified staff who has worked at least six months at UW Oshkosh.
