Building community and showing support for furloughed faculty and staff is the theme of an event to be held on the mandatory furlough day Jan. 25.

The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s U-Plan group, comprised of faculty, staff and student governance leaders, is inviting employees and their spouses or significant others to the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 25. The day’s events will be run entirely by student volunteers and employees.

The open house will feature food, games, golf simulators, climbing wall and bag tosses. Coffee and beverages will be provided by the Cyber Café, and faculty will do readings near the fireplace. Light food will be provided by the Chancellor’s Office.

There also will be a drawing for “8 for 8” coupons, which will give winning employees access to the SRWC on eight days during the year. Students will run the event.

“The goal is to give back to faculty and staff who are sacrificing for the good of the state’s budget,” said Alex Abendschein, vice president of the Oshkosh Student Association. “We are all in this together, and the students want to show their support.”

The schedule follows:

  • 11 a.m.-3 p.m. — Golf simulators open
  • 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. — Pick-up basketball games
  • 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. — Pick-up soccer games in the multipurpose gym
  • Noon-3 p.m. — Pick-up volleyball games
  • 2 p.m. — Group total fitness (cardio-strength interval) class

In addition to the Jan. 25 event, the U-Plan group will provide funding for 10 buses, allowing employees the opportunity to arrange to visit museums, take tours or organize group of volunteers to provide community service that day.
