The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh has been named the 7th most military friendly college in the country by Military Times’ Best for Vets review.

UW Oshkosh stood out among a record 650 schools to be acknowledged for its care toward military veterans and active-duty service members.

UW Oshkosh Veterans Resource Center Director Shawn Monroe said he is proud of the national recognition.

“To be recognized by Military Times as a national leader in supporting our student veterans is an absolute honor,” Monroe said. “This ranking is a testament not only to the outstanding work of the Veterans Resource Center team and the continued support of campus administration but is also a testament to the quality and character of our student veterans.”

The Military Times newsweeklies are published by Gannett Government Media, a subsidiary of Gannett Co., Inc.

The publication’s review consisted of nearly 150 questions that assessed colleges’ and universities’ friendliness toward and support for veterans, gauging the quality of online degree programs and the provision of a veteran’s resource office, both of which are part of UW Oshkosh.

“The support for our veterans is a commitment from our entire UW Oshkosh campus, and this Best for Vets ranking is a reflection of that commitment,” UW Oshkosh Registrar Lisa Danielson said. “Our Veterans Resource Center has increased awareness of veteran issues and has given veterans the support they need and deserve. We are honored to receive this ranking and will continue to serve as advocates for our UW Oshkosh veterans.”

Military Times has also recognized UW Oshkosh’s excellence in veteran care in past years. The institution reached the top 20 percent of schools rated in the G.I. Jobs 2012 Military Friendly Schools List last year.

Monroe said the new achievement is affirmation that UW Oshkosh’s passion for veteran care is paying off thanks to the collaborative work of campus staff and student veterans.
