Former University of Wisconsin Oshkosh baseball player Jarrod Washburn pitched the best game of his major league career, as he hurled a complete-game, one-hit shutout to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 5-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles July 6 in Seattle.
Washburn retired 27 of the 28 batters he faced, allowing only a soft single to left field by Nick Markakis in the fourth inning. It was the fourth shutout of Washburn’s career, the 10th one-hitter in Mariner history and the first ever at Safeco Field by a Seattle pitcher.
Washburn, who is in his fourth season with the Mariners, threw 110 pitches as he improved his season record to 5-6 and lowered his earned run average to 3.06. His four-seam and two-seam fastballs were especially effective against the Orioles, as he needed to throw just one changeup the entire game.
Washburn, 34, spent the first eight seasons of his major league career with The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He then signed a four-year, free agent contract with the Mariners following the 2005 season.
