Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch hosted an hour-long listening session Tuesday, April 24 with military veterans attending the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.

Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary John Scocos, Department of Safety and Professional Services Secretary Dave Ross and Department of Workforce Development Executive Assistant Georgia Maxwell also participated in the panel, one of several scheduled around the state in connection with Gov. Scott Walker’s 2012 “Year of the Veteran” events.

As the state Department of Veterans Affairs announced April 23, Gov. Walker made the declaration “to honor the deeds of Wisconsin’s veterans and provide them with the tools they need to reintegrate into civilian society such as education, health care and employment assistance.” Kleefisch and Scocos are overseeing the Year of the Veteran initiative.

About 20 military veterans who are students or alumni of UW Oshkosh attended the April 24 listening session in Sage Hall, designed as a private conversation between the state officials and the participants.

Kleefisch said the veterans shared concerns ranging from state support for military families — particularly children — to the timing of vital reimbursement checks for college students.
