Nancy Bielak, parking services manager, has been named the recipient of the STAR Award for April 2009. Bielak was nominated by Joe Blohm, parking services director. The nomination of Bielak follows:

“The Director of Parking Services was on medical leave from Nov.21, 2008, through Jan. 29, 2009. In addition to performing her own duties, Ms. Bielak also took on the director’s responsibilities during his absence.

“Nancy accepted the additional duties eagerly and with a very positive attitude. During the director’s absence, Nancy coordinated the activities of the Parking Services Staff, attended and contributed at meetings, including an Finance and Administration’ directors’ retreat, made decisions necessary to keep the department running smoothly and handled all questions (and complaints) that normally go to the director.

“In addition, she sold out the new reserved parking lot on Woodland Avenue (Lot 4). This will provide Parking Services with some much-needed revenue. It should be noted that Nancy filled in for the director with an absolute minimum of supervision and direction.

“Even without the absence of the director, Parking Services is a challenging department to work for. With only 3,600 parking spaces for a campus community of approximately 13,500 people, Ms. Bielak deals with people who are less than happy on a daily basis. She is very adept at explaining the parking situation and various parking options.”

Winners of the STAR Award receive a framed certificate, a reserved parking space for one month and a gift from University Books & More. The award for exceptional performance is presented each month to a member of the classified staff who has worked at least six months at UW Oshkosh.
