Ice picks, pennies and artistic minds are a few of the tools students will use to compete at the 2009 Winter Carnival Guiles Cup Feb. 27 to March 4 at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.

The annual event, sponsored by Reeve Union Board’s special events committee, features Greek, residence hall and independent divisions competing in more than 10 indoor and outdoor events relating to the theme “Shake It Up!”

Teams are awarded points for participating in each event and receive additional points for a first-, second- or third-place finish. Some events offer cash prizes. The 2009 Carnival events are as follows:

• Banner, Feb. 19-27 — Contestants are given a 3-by-3-foot piece of material to design an original banner relating to the theme and displaying the group’s name. The winners receive $50 and 20 points.

• Penny Wars, 9 a.m. Feb. 27 to 5 p.m. March 4 — Teams compete for the highest point value for their individual team. Pennies are counted as positive points, and silver coins sabotage other teams’ totals by counting as negative points. Winner receives 20 points and chooses which charity will receive the total amount raised by all organizations.

• Jeopardy, 7 p.m. Feb. 27, Titan Underground — Four-member teams will answer questions about campus facts, winter and snow globes in a format similar to the game of “Jeopardy!”

• Ice Sculpture, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 28, Algoma Street entrance of Reeve Memorial Union — Each team is given two 300-pound blocks of ice, picks, shavers and pails to carve a design that reflect the theme “Shake It Up!” No decorations or coloring is allowed. The winner receives $100 and 35 points.

• Rope Pull, 1 p.m. March 1, between Reeve Union and Clemens Hall — Coed teams compete in a rope-pulling contest. A team’s weight may not exceed 1,400 pounds.

• Pentathlon, 2 p.m. March 1, outside Reeve Union near Elmwood Avenue — Each five-person team must have at least two women but no more than three to compete in five undisclosed events.

• Snow Sculpture, 4 p.m. March 2 at sites throughout campus — Each team constructs a snow sculpture interpreting the theme “Shake It Up!” at a location of its choice on campus using snow, support structures and decorations. The winner receives $75 and 30 points.

• Dodge Ball Tournament, 5 p.m. March 3, outside Reeve Union near Elmwood Avenue — Teams with a maximum of 10 players and an equal number of males and females compete for 10 minutes. The winners receive $50 and 20 points.

• Variety Show, 7 p.m. March 4, Reeve Union Ballroom — Using any number of members, the team has a maximum of seven minutes to perform a skit or song relating to the theme. Winners receive $100 and 30 points. A reception with the presentation of the Guiles Cup follows.
