Brian Klinger, print manager in the Finance and Administration division, has been named the recipient of the STAR Award for March 2009. Klinger was nominated by Red Darland of Finance and Administration’ purchasing department. The nomination of Klinger follows:

“Brian has been on campus since February 2006 as the campus print manager. He is responsible for all off-campus print jobs. Brian also has taken on several special projects over and above his regular print manager duties.

“Specifically, Brian took the lead role in hammering out a new campus Pouring Rights contract that expired in July of 2008 (campus soft drink vendor). Brian started working on the project in early spring ’08, working with a campus committee developing new specs for the proposal.

“In July of ’08, the project had to be scrapped and redone through no fault of Brian’s. The proposal was finally completed and sent out to potential vendors. In October, an award was offered to Pepsi pending approval by the Board of Regents. In the November ’08, the Board of Regents approved the award, and the contract was issued for a possible seven-year contract.

“I cannot tell you the amount of time Brian dedicated to this project that was over and above his regular job duties — working late and taking work home in order to get the project completed on time prior to the Board of Regents meeting in November. This was a very complex contract, and it took a lot of effort on his part (since he was pretty inexperienced in writing Requests for Proposals-RFP).

“As time permits Brian continues to work on special projects. His can-do attitude is a breath of fresh air.

“The above is just one reason I feel Brian is very deserving of the classified staff STAR Award.”

Winners of the STAR Award receive a framed certificate, a reserved parking space for one month and a gift from University Books & More. The award for exceptional performance is presented each month to a member of the classified staff who has worked at least six months at UW Oshkosh.
