An obituary will appear later this week in the Oshkosh and Appleton newspapers.

An avid advocate for families of children with disabilities, Craig Fiedler joined the Department of Special Education as an assistant professor in 1987. His expertise and service has focused on special education and advocacy issues. He has authored four books and numerous scholarly publications regarding special education, parental advocacy, legal and ethical issues in assessment, attitudes toward special needs and other related subjects.

In addition to his work as a special education professor, Fiedler held different administrative positions at UW Oshkosh, including interim associate vice chancellor, interim dean for the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) and chair for the special education department.

Craig recently was awarded the Chancellor’s Medallion at the December Commencement in recognition of all that he did for people with special needs at a national level. Of course on campus we all respected and cared for Craig as a faculty member, a leader, a friend and as a very special person. We are all better off for knowing Craig.

We send our condolences to his family.

E. Alan Hartman
Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
