The following is a Veterans Day message from Chancellor Richard Wells to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh campus community on Nov. 11, 2011.

Colleagues,

Some 93 years ago, the Treaty of Versailles brought temporary cessation to the hostilities of World War I which was then known simply as “The Great War.” What was known initially as Armistice Day was instituted the following year, with the formal establishment of Veterans Day in 1920.

In the intervening years, this special day has been set aside in the spirit of the original proclamation of President Wilson to have reflections, “filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.”

Our nation’s recent history has been marked by armed conflict in several areas of operation. Military troops and families have been asked to make sacrifices to advance national interests. This record of service extends the tradition of all who have served during times of peace and war to ensure the safety of our nation.

Members of the UW Oshkosh community – faculty, staff, students and alumni – have all responded to this call to service. Just as we remember all who have been called to service, our heartfelt appreciation goes out to all of the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice through their military service.

UW Oshkosh is proud to have one of the largest veteran populations at any UW System institution. We work hard to provide an array of services to support our returning veterans, and we hope to continue to build upon our reputation for excellence that allowed us to be recognized as “Best for Vets” by the Military Times EDGE magazine. Last year UW Oshkosh was ranked first in the state and 36th in the nation for its programs, policies and resources for veterans.

This Veterans Day, we ask all members of our extended community to recognize and thank the veterans who have served our nation. We renew our sense of resolve to strengthen and enhance our University’s commitment support our veterans who supported us through their military service.

Regards,

Richard H. Wells

Chancellor
