The Feb. 1, 2009, deadline for completed one-act plays for the 11th-annual Student Playwriting Contest is fast approaching.

All currently enrolled University of Wisconsin Oshkosh undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Plays should be prepared in playwriting (script) format and should be between 16 and 35 pages long. Scripts should be submitted to the theatre department office in Arts and Communication W103.

The playwriting contest is a program initiated by theatre department resident playwright Richard Kalinoski in 1998. The winning playwright will receive a rehearsed public staged reading of his or her play, a framed certificate or poster and a small cash prize.  The public reading of the winning play (or plays) will take place later in the spring 2009 semester.

A winning play from a previous contest recently went on to national distinction at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

The most successful plays (from those submitted) are those that honestly address the difficult challenges of life. Both comic and dramatic plays are welcome.

Richard Kalinoski, associate professor of theatre, submitted this announcement. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to contribute calendar items, campus announcements and other good news to UW Oshkosh Today.
