Beta Alpha Psi members who took the plunge. The group raised more than $1,500 for the Special Olympics Polar Plunge, which counted as one of their service activities.
The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s Iota Rho chapter of Beta Alpha Psi recently earned international recognition for excellence in academics, professionalism and leadership.
Beta Alpha Psi is an international honorary organization for financial information students and professionals at UW Oshkosh.
“I credit the outstanding leadership of the club officers for this recognition. They were incredibly motivated and were extremely professional in every endeavor,” said Wendy Potratz, who recently assumed faculty advisor responsibilities.
Recognition as a distinguished chapter is a significant accomplishment, according to Mary Stone, 2011-2012 Beta Alpha Psi president.
“Under the leadership of Wendy Potratz, the Iota Rho chapter has exceeded the minimum requirements of Beta Alpha Psi and has excelled in the areas of academics, professionalism and leadership. As faculty advisor for the chapter, Wendy Potratz has provided an invaluable service to your academic institution. Wendy’s commitment to not only the profession, but also to the students of Beta Alpha Psi, will continue to be applauded today and every day to come,” said Stone in a letter sent to the College of Business Dean Bill Tallon.
To earn and maintain this designation, each student in the chapter is required to perform 20 hours worth of service and assist in outreach activities. The last time the Iota Rho chapter received this honor was in 2001.
“We’re always trying to help students differentiate themselves, and being in organizations like this is one way to do that. Beta Alpha Psi is recognized internationally, so when employers see that a student was involved in it, they know it means high scholastic achievement. It’s just another thing we’re doing to help students achieve their goals,” said Potratz.
The primary objective of Beta Alpha Psi, which was founded in 1919, is to encourage and give recognition to scholastic and professional excellence in the business information field. This includes promoting the study and practice of accounting, finance and information systems; providing opportunities for self-development, service and association among members and practicing professionals, and encouraging a sense of ethical, social, and public responsibility.
Iota Rho, which became a formally installed chapter in February 1999, is a very active with professional meetings, guest speakers, panel discussions, volunteer activities and field trips scheduled almost every week during the fall and spring semesters.
UW Oshkosh’s Iota Rho Chapter is one of 289 chapters on college and university campuses with more than 300,000 members initiated since Beta Alpha Psi’s formation.
