Red Darland, a purchasing agent/purchasing card administrator in Finance and Administration’ purchasing department, has been named the recipient of the STAR Award for November 2008.

Darland was nominated by Paulette Feld, Polk Library; Brenda Garza, College of Nursing; and Nancy Wright, College of Nursing.

The nomination of Darland follows:

“What can we say about Red Darland? More wonderful things than can be put down on this paper. Red is always willing to answer any question — big or small. Without complaint, she will walk you through processes step by step and will walk you through them no matter how many times you forget them.

“Red has been with UW Oshkosh so long that if you have questions about anything, she is able to give you who to contact and where they are. She is like the yellow pages of UW Oshkosh, only much more personable and user friendly.

“Red has been a member of the Classified Staff Advisory Council (CSAC) or its subcommittees for a number of years. Over the last two-plus years, Red has done a wonderful job organizing volunteers and assisting in organizing volunteers among the classified staff for community events. UWO classified staff have been well represented as volunteers at the Dragon Boat races, Festival of Lights and the Oshkosh Half Marathon, to name a few.

“Red would make the connection with volunteer coordinators for the event and then send out e-mails requesting volunteers. Specifically, the Festival of Lights was a huge success for classified staff volunteers due to Red’s coordination of the event. She spent hours organizing teams and getting all hours covered. Red made sure that any questions were answered and that new volunteers would be able to be trained by experienced volunteers. It couldn’t have been done without Red’s dedication.

“We believe that Red Darland is deserving of the STAR award.”

Winners of the STAR Award receive a framed certificate, a reserved parking space for one month and a gift from University Books & More. The award for exceptional performance is presented each month to a member of the classified staff who has worked at least six months at UW Oshkosh.
