A large crowd gathers May 10 to officially dedicate the former Multicultural Education Center at 751 Algoma Boulevard, as Dr. Boyland University Hall.
The University of Wisconsin—Oshkosh greater community recently joined to dedicate the refurbished and revitalized Dr. Boyland University Hall.
Dorian Boyland
Formerly known as the Multicultural Education Center (MEC), the historic building at 751 Algoma Boulevard, has been renamed in honor of Dr. Dorian Boyland, a distinguished alumnus, athlete and humanitarian.
A student athlete who excelled in baseball, Boyland attended UWO from 1972 to 1976. A member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, he noted that the fraternity unofficially used the MEC as their frat house and a gathering place that brought people together. The MEC was dedicated to supporting the success of students of color at UWO.
Boyland, a member of the class of 1976, was selected 45th overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1976 Major League Baseball draft. His career included time with the Pirates and San Francisco Giants organizations.
Following his major league career, Boyland built a successful nationwide chain of car dealerships, serving as CEO of Boyland Auto Group since 1985. He is president of several other business endeavors and his success has allowed him to concentrate on his humanitarian and philanthropic passions including scholarships and assistance for disadvantaged students and families.
In 1987, Boyland was inducted into the UWO Athletics Hall of Fame. In 2007, he was a UWO Distinguished Alumni Award honoree; and in 2019, a UWO Honorary Degree recipient.
Currently a resident of Orlando, Florida, about 250 of Boyland’s family members and friends attended the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony, including nearly 100 of his Alpha brothers from UWO.
Boyland said having the building named in his honor at his alma mater means a tremendous amount to him—more than he could ever dream.
