In UWO Book Shelf, we spotlight recent published books, articles and other writings by members of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh community. Have a published work we might feature? Let us know.

▶︎ Ursula Klein, director of women’s and gender studies at UW Oshkosh, published her first novel in February. Enchanted Autumn is a fantasy romance novel featuring a broom-riding witch, love potions, a haunted house and LGBTQ+ themes.

“The novel’s greatest strength is the unshakable friendship between Hazel and Roxy, who find ways to support each other even while pining for the same woman,” wrote Publisher’s Weekly ahead of the novel’s release. “The healthy communication keeps the love triangle from dragging, and the grounded magic system delights. Klein should win plenty of fans with this.”

While Klein has written academic articles and an academic book in this past, this is her first publish work of fiction. In 2021 she published Sapphic Crossings, about the popularity of cross-dressing women in 18th century British literature.

Klein will discuss the novel and the importance of queer love stories from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 10 in Sage Hall Room 1214. A virtual option also will be available. The event, titled Sapphic Storytelling, also features author Charlotte Greene (The Wedding Setup). For more information, email kleinu@uwosh.edu.

Enchanted Autumn is available as digitally and in paperback via Bold Stroke Books.

▶︎ Chia Vang, a 1999 graduate of UWO, published The Illiterate Daughter in late 2021. The historical fiction novel for young adults is the first in a planned series and chronicles her experience as a refugee from Laos and her struggles to adapt to a new life in Wisconsin. Vang, who studied elementary education, lives in Appleton and is a teacher in the Appleton Area School District.

The Illiterate Daughter is available on Amazon for Kindle and in paperback. For more information, visit chiagounzavang.com.
