In Italy, the Dorrits encounter Rigaud travelling with the newly-wed Gowans. In Venice, they meet Mrs. Merdle and Edmund Sparkler, who is still infatuated with Fanny. To Mr. Dorrit's annoyance, Amy struggles to adapt to her new, wealthy lifestyle. Back in London Arthur throws himself into his work, resolving to take up Mr. Doyce's case at the Circumlocution Office. Against her father's wishes, Amy corresponds with Arthur and befriends Pet but, Rigaud takes an unwelcome interest in her.
