Kabuki. Onoe Baiko VII as the Salt Gatherer
Description
This program features a performance of the 18th-century kabuki dance The Salt Gatherer by Kabuki actor Baiko VII, who holds the Japanese honorary title Living National Treasure. The performance is illuminated by a demonstration of techniques, an explanation of how certain effects are achieved, and a sequence showing Baiko giving notes on technique to his actor son. Baiko also grants a rare interview and explains his art and the origin of the dance he performs. Interview and commentary are by the noted authority on dance in Asia, Faubion Bowers.
