The Indian Subcontinent is romantic, remote and mysterious. This series examines the Indus Valley civilizations, Tamil Nadu-land of the temples-and the Mughal Empire, three very different dynasties that have shaped modern India. In "The Other Side of Taj Mahal," art historian Sona Datta follows Mughal expansion under key rulers. Akbar promoted religious tolerance and combined Hindu and Islamic art and architecture styles; Shah Jahan memorialized his wife Mumtaz in the Taj Mahal; and Aurangzeb imposed strict Islamic rule. Finally, British imperialism increased tensions between Muslims and Hindus, leading to violence and division.
