Plant Odysseys. Part 1
Description
There are some 300,000 species of flowering plant on Earth. A small number have so captivated humans across the ages that they have become iconic. This series explores the biological and botanical history of four iconic plants, tracing each species' epic journey across millennia. Part 1 investigates the co-evolution of the iris and its pollinators, its symbolism in Greek mythology, and 19th century bearded varieties that inspired amateur breeders. From its origins in Central Asia, the tulip became a cultural symbol of the Ottoman Empire before traveling to the Netherlands, where it sparked a national obsession and the first bubble economy.
