Gang of Four

Description

In this program, British art critic Waldemar Januszczak delves into the back stories of four of the most influential figures in the Impressionist movement: Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Frédéric Bazille. Viewers learn about the social and cultural influences that drove each artist toward a new style of painting, how the formerly disparate group united behind a set of common artistic goals, and how the Impressionists ultimately challenged and changed art forever. The film journeys from Pissarro's birthplace in the Virgin Islands to bustling mid-19th-century Paris and London - both of which, while hardly overflowing with the bucolic postcard imagery often associated with Impressionism today, served as incubators of a revolutionary way to capture the world on canvas. Technological improvements that helped the movement develop - most notably paint tubes, which allowed greater portability and quicker application - are also examined.
