ITP. The Lifesaving Work of Blood Platelets
Description
When Kay noticed her gums were bleeding she thought little of it, but after a trip to the doctor and an array of tests, she was diagnosed with immune thrombocytopenia, or ITP, a disorder in which a low platelet count causes excessive bleeding. Treatment for ITP ranges from surgery to steroids to "watch and wait"; Kay used medication and eventually went into remission, as did James, although James had also undergone a splenectomy that failed to correct the condition. After providing background on the cellular components of blood, this program looks at ITP and explains its various types and treatments.
