British Cities. Sex and Sensibility - The Allure of Art Nouveau
Description
Britain's contributions to Art Nouveau are examined in this program as cultural correspondent Stephen Smith unearths the bright, brief, and controversial career of Aubrey Beardsley, known for his erotically decadent illustrations. Smith also explores the work of designer Mary Watts and the massive influence of department store entrepreneur Arthur Liberty, whose "Liberty prints" are still used in fashion and home décor today. In Scotland, Smith celebrates the highly acclaimed artist Margaret MacDonald, as well as her husband, artist/architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
