Pakistan. For a Place Under the Heavens
Description
In the 1980s, Pakistan was a vibrant, secular society with a bustling nightlife. Women wore jeans and short blouses, left their hair loose, and followed the latest fashions. Now their daughters don't go outside without being cloaked in hijab - and what's more, some young girls feel the veil has become intrinsic to their identity and welcome the personal privacy it affords. In this intimate documentary, filmmaker Sabiha Sumar looks back through five decades of change in her country, speaking with Muslim scholars, feminists, and family friends to explain the erosion of women's rights in Pakistan and the role of religious authority in Islamic political thought.
