New Orleans City Guide. Pilot Guides
Description
This Pilot Guides episode follows Justine Shapiro through New Orleans, the one the French built below sea-level. Justine takes a tour of the French Quarter, featuring houses of the French Creole traders, including cottages for slave-mistresses, and historical jazz center Congo Square. She visits the Garden District, the Creole cemetery, the Voodoo Museum, and tours two plantations, one tour evokes the age of genteel southern living while the other features a female-run plantation and handles Louisiana's racist past sensitively. Justine celebrates Lundi Gras and Mardi Gras, learns about Creole funeral rituals, and locates the resting place of Marie Laveau, the 19th-century voodoo queen of New Orleans. In Jean Lafitte National Park she learns that when Cajun people were expelled from Canada in the 1750s they built their homes in the marsh of the bayou, and she goes an airboat trip through the area. Finally she paddles through the wildlife friendly Bearer Terrier Park.
