San Francisco City Guide. Pilot Guides
Description
Justine Shapiro rides into San Francisco to experience the liberal culture by the bay in this Pilot Guides episode. She takes a cable car to Chinatown before visiting the Italian quarter, former hangout of the beat poets where Justine runs into Lawrence Ferlinghetti browsing the shelves of City Lights bookstore. She visits Alcatraz, America's most secure prison until 1963, and meets former inmate Leon 'Whitey' Thompson. Justine joins an underground guerilla art event, admires the giant redwood tree off the Muir Woods, tours the gay neighborhood, Castro, and Haight-Ashbury, 1960s flower-power legend, and participates in Critical Mass, a monthly cycling protest that blocks the city's roads. Justine witnesses the Mexican Day of the Dead festival in the Mission quarter before heading to Pacifica, a beach for surfing beginners and tries her hand at riding the waves.
