Vietnam. Globe Trekker
Description
This Globe Trekker episode follows Justine Shapiro across Vietnam, which stretches 1,000 miles along the east coast of the Indochinese peninsula. In Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), she explores a vibrant marketplace and celebrates the new years Tet festival by letting off firecrackers to scare away spirits before encountering some chilling reminders of the Vietnam War, like the underground network where the Viet Cong hid and lived. Then she heads to Cao Dai, the center of a new Vietnamese religion that combines Buddhism, Confuscism, Taoism, Christianity, and Islam, and makes time to bike around the ancient town center of Hanoi and stop at the indulgent sea-side resorts. Justine also visits Hue, the former home to emperors and exquisite architecture that was bombed during the Tet offensive of 1968. She ends up at the Gulf of Tonkin, dotted with over three thousand limestone islands, where she meets a family that lives on an old fishing boat.
