Description
In this Globe Trekker video, Megan McCormick begins her Egyptian adventure in Cairo at the Bazaar of Khan al-Khalili, a huge market which has been open since the Middle Ages, and goes on to visit the mosque at Ibn Tulun, the spot legend holds Noah's ark came to rest and Moses confronted pharaoh's magicians, the Great Pyramids at Giza, and the monastery at St Antony's. En route to Siwa, a remote town dominated by crumbling remains of the 13th century fortress of Shali, Megan stops at El Alamein, a war cemetery commemorating World War II soldiers. From Siwa she embarks on a five day desert trek to the west bank of Luxor, also known as Monument Valley. Along the way she joins a family celebrating sebuwa, a ceremony held a week after the birth of a baby, and visits the ruins of Bagawat, site of 263 Coptic tombs dating back 1,800 years. Finally, Megan visits Abu Simbel, where Ramses had his sun temple built over three thousand years ago.
