Muhammad Yunus, professor at Chittagong University, founded the Grameen Bank to provide access to capital for the poorest in Bangladesh, enabling many Bengali people to escape poverty. The microfinance business model soon spread with the establishment of the Grameen Trust, which supports organizations adopting these strategies. In addition, the trust seeks to fund solutions that can directly provide vital services and needs such as health care, education, clean water, healthful foods, and access to electricity. This 2009 Falling Walls lecture video highlights Grameen Social Business, an entirely new business model that contrasts strongly with traditional profit-maximizing models - and that aims to eradicate extreme poverty and foster economic sustainability. For this work, Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.
