A low-cost ingredient in countless food products and a healthier alternative to trans fats, palm oil is also increasingly being used for biofuel and as a substitute for other petroleum products. But not all news about palm oil is good. This program takes a balanced look at an oil that its proponents are calling "liquid gold": its many valuable applications, its beneficial health properties, the economic boon it represents to the economies of developing nations, and, on the downside, the severe environmental impact that the expansion of palm oil plantations is having on the irreplaceable rainforests of Malaysia and Indonesia.
